We provide a wide variety of blogging services for clients in the real estate and mortgage industries. Some are familiar with the general concept of blogging, but don’t know how to get started. Others are less familiar with blogs, and need a bit more introduction. This article is for the latter group. It answers the question: What is a real estate blog?
What Is a Real Estate Blog?
Before we get to the real estate-specific uses for a blog, let’s start with the technology itself:
A blog is a website built around a blogging program. They’re made up of individual entries or articles, known as “posts.” In a typical blog setup, the entries or posts are presented in reverse-chronological order. This means the most recent entries or articles are given prominence and shown at the top of the list.
So what is a real estate blog? Well, it’s a real estate website built on a blogging platform. It is an industry-specific use of this particular technology.
Blog can also be used as a verb, as in the following sentence: “Today I will blog about home prices in my area, because it’s a popular topic for my intended audience.”
It is the blogging program that makes all of this possible. This is a content-management system (CMS) that lets you publish content online, quickly and easily. Some blogging programs are free or “open source,” while others charge a monthly fee. When we build real estate blogs for our clients, we typically use the WordPress program. We do this for three reasons:
- It’s open-source software, which means you can install it onto your web server for free.
- It’s sophisticated yet easy to use.
- It has a lot of add-ons or “plugins” that can extend the functionality.
Other popular blogging programs include Blogger and TypePad. Blogger is owned by Google and is free to use. TypePad requires a monthly fee, which varies based on the features you want.
So that answers the first question: What is a real estate blog? Let’s move on to talk about the reasons you might want to use a blog:
Why Do It: The Benefits of Blogging
Blog programs simplify the internet publishing process so that anyone can do it. And I do mean anyone. If you can type an email, you have the tech “skills” needed to publish a blog post. It’s that simple. (That’s the whole point of using one in the first place.)
A real estate blog can help you improve your search engine visibility and website traffic. The more articles you publish, the more ways people have to find you online. For example, if you blog about a new subdivision going up in your area, people will be able to find you when doing Google searches for that subdivision … or even for generic terms like “neighborhoods in [your city].”
A real estate blog can help you demonstrate your knowledge of the local real estate market, which will make people more inclined to contact you. In this way, blogging can serve as a lead generator — in addition to a traffic generator. It can bring more people to your site, and make them more inclined to contact you. Bonus!
So that’s what a real estate blog is. It’s an internet-publishing technology and a business-building tool all in one.
